The first thought that comes to mind is, why this work is required in addition to LCP? I have not compared the specific details with LCP yet, from surface level it looks that objectives are similar to LCP. The proposal indicates that it intends to be aligned with W3C technologies and IDPF’s encryption specs. So, it does not look that they will create a world of their own. But it would be important to understand the motivation for parallel work. Unfortunately, we're not members so I wouldn't be able to rep for the US in any of these. I would add that the publisher themselves are not expected to apply the DRM, but they could if they were also a distributor. I still have the problem of participation in these NISO groups, because of bandwidth. So far, no person from the USA has signed up to work on this internationally. Is it to start a working group around creating a standard or is it for this as a standard itself? There's an issue, at least in my part of the business, that I see in the basic proposal. They wrote: "However, it will create inconvenience to publishers since they have to manage multiple versions of protected e-book contents to deliver them to different libraries. It will also cause inconvenience to end users since they also have to install multiple reading systems for their use." As a publisher, I don't apply DRM to my own books - we rely on the reading systems to apply it. This standard would (if I'm reading it properly) require application from publishers as well as reading systems and I'm unclear as to its impact on accessibility since DRM'd EPUBs and AT have traditionally not played well together. I think I could probably review this whole this this weekend but I'm not sure of the context of the what the vote actually goes to. re: PDTS ISO/IEC 22424-1 EPUB Preservation - Part 1 and Part 2 Archiving! Something we discuss frequently but haven't successfully moved forward on from what I recall. I'm fairly uninformed when it comes to archiving needs and methods but I'm sure Tzviya (when she's back from vacation) will have something to say or someone to point to on that topic.
