A followup.
Regarding the second table in section 5.8.3 (the one about where
aria-multiselectable='true'): the left "Scenario" column has the sense
of a conditional. Specifically, for the second row of the table: "*If*
selection follows focus, then the UA must fire the following events".
If that's the correct reading, what does it mean for selection to follow
focus? Suppose script for a focus listener was added that changed
aria-selected to 'true' upon a focus-gained event. Does that count as
selection following focus?
