Web-based Signage Working Group Charter in Development (Advance Notice)

Hello,

The W3C Advisory Committee received an advance notice today that
participants of the Web-based Signage Business Group [1] are currently
working on a Working Group charter [2] to create a Web Remote Management
API.

The discussions have been initiated at the AC2011 in May. To have a
forum to discuss, initially for use cases, the Web-based Signage
Business Group (BG) established in spring of 2012, and then gathered at
the workshop [3] in June 2012. The BG created a use case document [4]
and three profile documents [5][6][7] for implementing signage players
in browsers.

During TPAC2015, signage system based on the three profile documents
were implemented on browser based TVs by several manufacturers deployed
on hallways. While implementing the system, the implementers found that
web-based signage player requires additional browser APIs such as
retrieving hardware configuration. While operating the system, the
implementors also found that adding such APIs will be very useful for
the deployment.

In parallel to these experiments, proposal for web-based signage toward
W3C standard has been posted [8] and discussed extensively at a TPAC2015
breakout session [9]. At the BG face-to-face meeting following the
breakout session, the selection of APIs for the standardization has been
discussed, and members agreed to establish Web-based Signage Working
Group as the next step. There seems to be enough momentum and interest
to form a W3C Web-based Signage Working Group.

We welcome W3C Advisory Committee representatives' general expressions
of interest and support on <w3c-ac-forum@w3.org>. Public discussion
takes place on the Web-based Signage Business Group mailing-list
<public-websignage@w3.org> (archive [10]).

If you have any questions or need further information, please contact
Shigeya Suzuki <shigeya@w3.org>.

A formal Advisory Committee Review for this charter is expected in July.
