In general it's hard to come up with a "variable-width" character without recourse to technological solutions that are tied to a specific font technology, which is something we have generally tried to avoid in designing SMuFL thus far. For things like hairpins, including special "messa di voce" pairs of hairpins, I think it is better to recommend that the scoring application handles the drawing of these.
