RE: XPath Version

Mmm... It looks like “and its successors” was added at the last minute without much of a discussion and without thinking a lot about the implications.

 

If both versions are incompatible, without a flag indicating which version is used, the processor may be in trouble.

 

But I’m not sure where such flag would be set, on each element that uses XPath? At some top-level location (but there are not necessarily a top-level location in ITS)

 

All that not to mention that implementations of XPath 2.0 are far less common than 1.0 (and often require dependencies).

Thanks Shaun, that's a good point and not one we've discussed yet, but it will definitely be an issue when we get into the guts of the implementation specific for data categories. I made a note in the ITS1.0  requirement document (http://www.w3.org/International/multilingualweb/lt/wiki/Requirements#Support_ITS_1.0_Data_Categories)  and also raised this as an issue so we can track it.

But XPath 2.0 isn't entirely backwards compatible with XPath 1.0.

I suppose new standards probably ought to use the newest version.
But XPath 2.0 is considerably more difficult to implement, and a
full implementation requires an XSD implementation. 2.0 isn't as
widely implemented as 1.0, and requiring it could hurt adoption.

Sorry if this has been discussed already. I didn't see anything
on the wiki pages.
