I guess if all columns are empty for one attribute it means 'no equivalence'.

What do you think about asking the mapping editors to fill out every row in the table?
In other words not leave any attributes blank. If there is no matching attribute in the external format, then it has to be marked as "no equivalence".  That might also be useful for the API to know!
