RE: Non-text contrast comment

Hi Alistair and All,

For me,

  * row 2 is the most difficult to read.
     * The background colors are darker. Thus the text/background color contrast is poor. (Unlike Erich, I almost never invert colors.)
  * row 3 and row 4 are equally legible.
     * Row 4's borders are apparent to me at magnification. I think I can see them without magnification, but that may be an optical illusion because I know they are there.

I reviewed Andrew's email of many examples. I think we covered this, but I have a question. What would the effect be if we said there must be a 3.1 contrast ratio against adjacent colors; and if there is a border, then a 3.1 contrast against it and the colors on either side of it?

Thanks Erich, Jon,

It would be worth reviewing the email Andrew has sent to the AG list about how we interpret links and buttons with non text contrast.

We are in danger of making a broad requirement that makes things worse in a significant proportion of cases.

Cheers,

Alastair

Agree with Jon's assessments.

>From my perspective of someone using invert colors, the text-to-background contrast ratio of row #2 is the worst.

Row 1 would actually be my overall preference, except for that 5th button from the left, which could for blend in with my dark background if viewed as a stand-alone button. The button in the same position (5th from left) in Row 4 would be better.

Hi Alastair, the darker text on the background for row # 2 is worse for me in regards to reading the text. Finding the button boundaries are not an issue for me with any of your examples. #4 is my preference but is not necessary. The text contrast is far more important for me.

Hi everyone,

The attached doc is a (public) comment on non-text contrast and buttons.

It's a useful format as they've shown some examples.

We'll have to deal with it pretty rapidly, I'm interested though if you could look at the last section with the 4 rows of buttons and say:

     * Is the 1st row noticeably poor contrast for the buttons? I.e. would it be hard to find/discern them?
     * Are rows 2-4 better? If so, which is best?

The first bullet of non-text contrast is proving to be the most difficult, whereas I had thought it would be the second bullet!

Cheers,

-Alastair
