I used ‘or’ in the general English sense, sorry for being overly brief
and unclear.

I raised the syntax on this list early on; Michael was one of the
strong proponents of ; for alternatives, and i'd wanted | to separate
alternatives and ; to end a rule, so as to be more in line with common
current usage as i saw it.
