  *   We would need to carefully pick a character *if* Kanji is proportional like Kazuraki. If so, however, I am not sure if it has enough benefits to go extra miles to define a representative character.

I think we should not extend this discussion beyond the fixed-width Japanese fonts, squarish or condensed. As I discussed it already, handling the relationship between a font with true proportional glyphs and its “referential-body” (Kihon-Zenkaku) needs the generalization and expansion of the concept of an EM box, which we discussed before, because such a font may not necessarily have a glyph whose own particular “body” fits the dimensions of the “referential-body” designed for the typeface as a whole.

Using the character 水 or 永 as the representative of a typical rectangular, squarish or condensed body of the font works, as long as the main kanji and kana glyphs in the font are uniformly constrained by the rectangular frame. It’s fine, as we decided not to go further in the direction of generalization of the notion of the EM body in the context of this discussion.
