My understanding is the metal body or shank with the character face on it became a UPM design space in digital fonts, and it is that UPM design space that is sized to the point size just as the shank was. So in a way it is standardized and follows historical convention.

ink differs across different designs is a feature なのはわかりますが、その違うものになんらかの統一的な尺度を与えるのがサイズですよね。今のフォントサイズの定義は欧文に対する尺度として私もあまりピンと来ません。日本語なら全角という考えで揃っていて今のフォントサイズで役に立つんですが。

私もよくあんな提案をデザイナーから聞きます。タイポグラフィのボディと字形のデザインの関係を勘違いしていると思います。Times New RomanとHelvetica が同じサイズなのに字形の高さが違うのがバグじゃない。While it is true, font size is “useless” in determining the ink. But the fact that the ink differs across different designs is a feature, not a bug. The designer made that choice of how the font should occupy the design space. It would alter the design to equalize all fonts to size to the ink.

フォントサイズは文字の縦方向が基準ではない．縦組の場合は，文字の左右サイズ，横組では，文字の天地サイズ．ですので，字送り方向（定義された用語は字詰め方向）は，ここでいう“方形幅”でよい．

ここで私の意味するフォントサイズとは、コンピューター上でのフォントサイズなのですが、調べてみるとフォントに存在する em size という正方形の寸法だそうで。しかし、この em size と実際にデザインされる文字の間の関係は緩く、同じポイント数の欧文フォントを指定しても、実際に感じられる大きさはフォントによってまちまちなのはそのせいのようです。今のフォントサイズの定義なんて役に立たん！と言っているサイトを見つけました。

日本語の場合、この事情はどうなんでしょう。em size = 仮想ボディとして、その中に長い方の辺が90%-95%? くらいになるようにデザインされていると仮定すると、長体を横に組んだ場合や、平体を縦に組んだ場合は、そのフォントサイズは字送り方向ではなく、それと直角方向のサイズに近い（実際には墨の部分の大きさより少し大きい）、ということになりそうです。

この理解は正しいでしょうか？　必須のポイントのみ、概ね150-200字くらいの簡潔さで教えていただけると嬉しいです ;)
