As far as I can tell from today's HTML-A11Y-TF Text Sub Team minutes [1], W3C WAI PF appear to be OK with allowing ARIA to reference @hidden content and see it as a "nice to have" feature, "orthogonal to @longdesc". I've now removed all references to longdesc from the CP [2].
