Isn't it quite self-evident that providing alternate text for several  
hundred images is not practical? The only reason I made an interface  
around the image directories on that site was to make it slightly easier  
to browse.

Whether or not alt is required doesn't really affect my tiny insignificant  
application though. If I care about validation and alt was required in  
HTML5 I could just use <img id="viewer" alt> instead of <img id="viewer">  
and all would be fine...
