Accessibility is the motivation for communicating the meaning. The  
ARIA proposal is about communicating meanings that are applicable to  
AT integration.

Turning role='' into a catch-all device risks turning it into  
<object>--something that does everything in theory but doesn't do any  
of it well in practice.
