Follow up from 6-Sept-2012 W3C GLD WG call

Hi,
Thanks all who participated in what I hope many found a useful discussion around improving the usefulness and value of the Community Directory. The minutes from our call today are here. [1] Thanks again Phil for scribing.

Consider this the 2012 re-ignition of the Community Directory. This time, with increased focus & attention to delivering something we'll all use within funding requests, papers, conference presentations, etc to showcase the value proposition of an LOD approach.

All interested members are welcome to iterate in on the wiki -- this is very open & everyone should have have something to contribute. Again, as PhilA so eloquently stated, "honesty appreciated."

Goal:
Show there is an eco-system of tools & suppliers (to prospective funders/buyers, e.g., public, private, NGOs, others) by showcasing sites, projects & tools for publishing & using 4 & 5 star LOD.

Next steps:
1) Capture useful data as the first step
* App & published data must conform to the Best Practices & Vocabs we're publishing in the WG (the dog food bar is met)

2) Focus on data quality
* Data must be well modeled, published as 5 star LOD
* Engage a uni intern to give 4 hours a week to "maintaining the garden"

3) Improve usability of the Community Directory site
* Within a well-defined scope, update the UI/UX for entry, analysis and visualization

4) Promote integration of this data
* Consider promoting re-use via a Challenge (ISWC, gov't, consortium or private funded effort)

5) Provide place for feedback
* http://code.google.com/p/dir-w3-org/issues/list
* Mailing list with responsive currator/community contact

This becomes one source of high quality data on data publishing efforts within government, there will of course be others. We're not falling victim to the "One Ring to rule them all" mentality. Acknowledge other directories will & should co-exist. We can hopefully serve as an exemplar for a publishing a useful directory w/ human & machine readable content.

Action Items:
* Update the requirements wiki [2] (Bern, others)
* Put together & distribute a position description for a uni intern for approximately 4 hours / week of data curation & Web research (Bern)
* Distribute to find an intern(s) willing to fulfill the data curator role (all in GLD WG)
* Liaise with other W3C staff involved in communications & updating W3 infrastructure to increase value of membership (chairs, Sandro)

Cheers,

Bernadette Hyland, co-chair
