This is not a "new usage" at all - OGC publishes profiles - and they are usually functional profiles of services bound to data profiles of standard data schema.  We cant just keep inventing or narrowing scope of terms because we dont understand some wider context.  Explicitly clarifying scope each time we use a term (which is IMHO unnecessary because a reader really ought to be able to understand when data is being talked about)  is an acceptable compromise to help people with a narrow experience base that other senses for such terms exist.
