Re: Gilman-8 Follow on LC-1574 Relative Size Measures

Hello Al,

Thanks again for your comments on the DISelect Last call.

In your response to the disposition of comments for Gilman-8 [1], you did not accept the disposition of the comment. In particular, you asked that we find a way to help accelerate adoption of a replacement for the 'em' unit with one based on the width of a zero character in a font.

I understand, as a result of a discussion at last week's Multigroup Meeting in Boston [2], that the likely delay in getting this new unit adopted through CSS means that the urgency to include it in DISelect, or the associated XPath functions, is lower than anticipated. As a result, I believe that you now are in a position to accept the disposition of this comment.

Perhaps you would be able to confirm that by posting to the list?

I should point out that DIWG agrees that relative measures of screen size are a potentially important part of the delivery context. Indeed, current work on the ontology for the delivery context does include some measures, based on those from UAProf. I understand from our conversation last week that measures such as these, based on default font characteristics of the device and possibly subject to user preference, would provide a suitable source of information for your needs. The extensible nature of the DISelect XPath access functions specification should enable such additional information to be made available, in future, without requiring revision to the DISelect documents.

Very best wishes
Rhys Lewis
