I supposed (possibly erroneously) that giving a final picture could make it easier to understand but, sure, we can make it a different way so, let's split this PR into smaller ones, the first one is #210. It only contains fixes for #152 and #168 and no other changes/refactoring. Please tell if this it is good enough to start review, if so I'll put the rest of the changes in follow-up patches.
