It seems it would be worthwhile to distinguish between (and define) hard iron distortion caused by elements on the device itself (e.g. a speaker if the device has one) which calibration should correct, even on an raw sensor, from hard iron distortion caused by external objects. Afaik, it's the latter we're interested in here.
