The problem is that really depends on the use case. E.g. when specifying tints and shades of a base color, if lightness is not preserved, the design system is heavily problematic. But I'm sure lightness preservation is not the top priority in other use cases (and even here it's not over everything else — you'd probably prefer to tolerate *some* lightness shift to avoid a huge hue shift, it's all about the balance of tradeoffs).
