I understand this. I think from a mental model point of view, there is still an association with the DOM element, even if there isn't parent-child relationship.

I don't see an issue here either. You're finally able to style a pseudo element of an element that is "leaving" the DOM.

I understand there are a few conceptual leaps in my proposal, but I think that if you separate yourself with the implementation details and think only about the mental model, it works pretty well.
