The issue with your approach [is the same as with `<style scoped>`](https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/3547#issuecomment-524207845), in that non‑supporting user agents will ignore the `[scoped]` attribute and apply the `<style>`s to all `<span>`s, instead of just the scoped ones.
