Two comments here:

1. We've talked about an &ldquo;additive cascade&rdquo; concept for a 
while.  This is one of a number of places where it would be useful.

2. This is also one of the reasons that the 
<code>font-variant-*</code> properties are preferable to the low-level
 <cdoe>font-feature-settings</code>.
