Yes, this was considered early on, and was part of some of the early 
spec proposals.  Unfortunately, it's rather complicated to do - it 
ends up being a subset of the Regions functionality, which the WG 
ended up abandoning due to implementor objection.

It's definitely something I'd still like to pursue in the future, 
especially since most of the problems with Regions functionality come 
from the "one source => multiple boxes" part, while this is "multiple 
sources => one box", a theoretically simpler problem.  However, this 
is definitely not going into Grid level 1, so I've tagged it as Grid 2
 to keep track of things.
