Translating MathCAT is a bigger deal than translating most applications
because all the math characters and phrases need translating. The number of
translations reach into the larger hundreds of items. I've tried to set up
MathCAT so that translation is easier than it was in MathPlayer and I hope
to be able to bring over some of the translations that were used for
MathPlayer (which includes Spanish), but I've been holding off on this as
I'm still adding new rules. Keeping the translations in sync between
languages is tricky. You can't just translate the words as different
languages speak math differently beyond just words. E.g., Asian languages
tend to reverse the direction that fractions are read ("b under a") and
other languages have 'one, many, and plural' vs. 'one and plural'. So the
actual rules used sometimes need to be modified in addition to the rules.
This means I need to find translators who know not just the language, but
also have some mathematical knowledge of how notations are spoken in that
language.
