Hi Phil,
Here's a few updates from me. There is quite a lot about the OGC view of coverages on our sdw wiki (https://www.w3.org/2015/spatial/wiki/Cov_References by Peter Baumann, mostly) but that misses the   newer OGC discrete global grid system  which might actually suit us well - it builds hierarchies of nested cubes - with lower resolution nested in side lower  resolution - I ma meeting with the chair of this gropu on Friday anyway and I can find out more then.

There was some work done at munster on coverage as a cube for linked data (pre-rdf datacube) but it provides a nice start.
