The mirroring of GH conversations on the ML ensures that the W3C keeps a record of the discussion and makes it easier for people who are not on GH to find and follow issues. That said, if the duplication is a pain for most, I could live with an alternative where we'd keep everything in GH and archive/mirror things in w3.org space on a regular basis.
