Steve,

What about this statement in the ARIA 1.1 for “banner”:

Within any document<https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#document> or application<https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#application>, the author SHOULD mark no more than one element<https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#dfn-element> with the banner role<https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#dfn-role>.

What do you think the design recommendation should be for “banner” and “contentinfo”?

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,
some suggestions:
The advice should warn against overuse of landmarks based anecdata from users and data from the webaim survey http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey5/#numlandmarks<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__webaim.org_projects_screenreadersurvey5_-23numlandmarks&d=BQMFaQ&c=8hUWFZcy2Z-Za5rBPlktOQ&r=REZD8fc2AwufInstfW3L5jSLVS8bjZtAodDOhat7yAI&m=vrECNjUMvCJRJSSwC1_4vk2rgDIWV8o9itDZ2zKf3Qs&s=PbguoWW-fT3SYLCDfQaO1tqvdk9eRtWF-IZbi-SXHqU&e=>

The advice on main should be the same as banner
"A page should have only one main landmark." as it is banner and main have same usage advice in the ARIA spec https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#banner<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.w3.org_TR_wai-2Daria-2D1.1_-23banner&d=BQMFaQ&c=8hUWFZcy2Z-Za5rBPlktOQ&r=REZD8fc2AwufInstfW3L5jSLVS8bjZtAodDOhat7yAI&m=vrECNjUMvCJRJSSwC1_4vk2rgDIWV8o9itDZ2zKf3Qs&s=b1QJ3oXu1etydQQmKmYWJVEKoHa-paT8XYCxf4_YmR0&e=>

We have some questions for the Monday call:

How and why do role=document and role=application affect the design patterns for Banner and Contentinfo Landmarks.
See NOTEs in ARIA 1.1 Specs:
