RE: Comments on EPUB 3 Structural Semantics Vocabulary 1.1

Hi Frederick,

I have worked on these vocabularies for years. It was our hope for years that AT would somehow pick up the information in the EPUB SSV, but that does not happen without a lot of work. ARIA is conveyed to AT because of the details in the Accessibility API Mappings. We partially solved this for SSV with the digital publishing extension to ARIA and the accompanying AAM.

Any term not explicitly covered can adapted with some combination of labels and data-*, depending on your needs.

Subject: Comments on EPUB 3 Structural Semantics Vocabulary 1.1

This is an external email.
Dear colleagues,

concerning the EPUB 3 Structural Semantics Vocabulary 1.1 (https://www.w3.org/TR/2021/NOTE-epub-ssv-11-20211104/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.w3.org/TR/2021/NOTE-epub-ssv-11-20211104/__;!!N11eV2iwtfs!-uWThmFCMapBcKp13nJ2HgqBOWg3uP-MdrUUolMgl6wzE8RXfgi6J3S1XIYc9g$>), I have reviewed the text and find it needing no further comments on our part.

The only thing that really popped out at me was this passage:

“The applied semantics refine the meaning of their containing elements without changing their nature for assistive technologies, as happens when using the similar role attribute [HTML]. The attribute does not enhance the accessibility of the content, in other words, only provides hints about the purpose.”

This may be true, but there is of course nothing stopping AT from using the semantics to further accessibility of EPUB documents. This may be an issue worth clarifying, but nothing too critical in my view.

What do you think?

See you in a couple of hours!

Best,
Fredrik
