Microformats

Hi all,

An issue was filed that recommended we look into microformats for Adapt, and includes some specific suggestions of formats where there may be overlap with our attributes: https://github.com/w3c/adapt/issues/221 - I've looked into it, and have some recommendations, below.

The OP suggested we investigate microformats for some things, and the @rel attribute in particular for others. They requested that we include a review of microformats on our existing wiki page that compares technical techniques [1].

Note that we looked at _microdata_ not _microformats_ - the difference is explained here: https://webmasters.stackexchange.com/a/72691 with more info at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Global_attributes/itemtype - but essentially, microdata has some grounding in HTML; there are specific attributes used to provide key-value information (a bit like with the <meta> element, but they can be applied in more places). Microformats, in contrast, use element nesting in combination with pre-arranged CSS classes to convey meaning.

Briefly, my concerns about microformats: it's a living spec; non-semantic (partly - not true for @rel because the microformats wiki's @rel page has been officially adopted into HTML); possible validity issues regarding where @rel can be used (need to investigate further).

Positives about microformats: already in use; simple.

We should look into the related @rel attribute: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/links.html#other-link-types (and perhaps whether it meets our needs, or could be extended).

My recommendation: we should research, and include microformats in the wiki page as requested; also investigate the suggestions around @rel from issue #221.

best regards,

Matthew
