I'm confused by your "potential transition problem". In HTTP/1.1, servers can start looking at accept-encoding, and send "gzip" or "x-gzip" depending on which is acceptable. Servers that want to send encodings without seeing an Accept-encoding: need to do whatever they're doing now. So I don't think this is an HTTP/1.1 issue. Larry
