If it were me I'd do *one* branch of whatever your trunk is now and make it the 1.6 branch and leave it alone and move on.
( keeping 2 not 4 branches)

Yeah, that's an idea. I wonder if it would be acceptable to have Saxon
9.5/Java 1.6 and Saxon 9.6/Java 1.7? If I treat them as orthogonal, I
wind up with four builds.
