Validating from applications

Can someone advise how an application can automatically validate XML files
against XSD schemas,
and display clear results to the user?

I've tried XSV, but it gives obscure error messages, including "Doc has no
DTD, validating abandoned"
(this even occurs on the BookCatalogue examples).

I need a method that can run in Windows, and preferebly (not a must) on
Unix. Our environment is VC++.
I'm looking for simple methods, without installing huge products such as
Xerces.
