Hello! I'm writing a validating parser for XML based on the XML 1.0 recommendation from the W3C. It turns out that the recommendation does not describe how to construct replacement text for external parsed entities. It describes external entities in section 4.2.2, well-formed parsed entities in 4.3.2, and construction of internal entity replacement text in section 4.5. However, it seems to be silent on the construction of replacement text for external parsed entities. When obtaining the text of the external entity, do we follow the same rules outlined in section 4.5 to translate parameter entities and character references in the text, or are these translations not made for external entities? Any guidance in this matter would be extremely appreciated!
