Last year around this time Satish Thatte, Henrik, and I published "Soap Messages with Attachments"[1] (aka SwA) as a W3C note. It provides a mechanism based on MIME for creating messages that combine SOAP with non-SOAP and esp. non-XML formatted data. While the XMLP working group has resolved issues that transform SOAP into a standard, a number of SOAP implementations have tried out the SwA approach. From what I have heard, these trials have found SwA to be useful. The next step would be an effort to resolve ambiguities or inconsistencies in SwA that prevent interoperation and to insure it integrates with other specifications. Whether that is taken up by this Working Group or not, a rapid resolution of any problems in SwA would greatly enhanced by a running start. I would appreciate email from anyone with suggestions for SwA at John_Barton@hpl.hp.com [2]. I am especially interested in implementation experiences and volunteers to verify changes should they be required. I will compile a list and post a pointer back here. At the risk of repeating: please send email so we don't slow progress on SOAP 1.2 with SwA discussions here (yet ;-).
