Kevin, I think you are right with your concern about interoperability between DC-Lib and Bib-2. As soon as you start indexing DC-Lib records what are the access points for the index? It seems rather obvious to me to use the DC-Lib names also as access points. As Z39.50 is also going to use XML as valid record syntax and more and more records will be DC-Lib in XML, I would like to suggest that Bib-3 = DC-Lib. Theo van Veen >>> "Gladwell, Kevin" <Kevin.Gladwell@bl.uk> 22-04-02 16:04 >>> Barb I appreciate that the Bib-2 attribute set is mainly designed for searching MARC databases. The DC-Lib Profile is however designed, amongst other things "to expose MARC data to other communities (through conversion to DC)". DC-Lib record will need to be searchable via Z39.50, is it expected that Bib-2 can be used for this or is it expected that another attribute set will be created for this purpose? If the latter is the case ignore the following. I have been informed that the latest version of DC-Lib is at http://www.loc.gov/marc/dc/library-application-profile_200204.html. i) DC-Lib uses DC CREATOR, CONTRIBUTOR and PUBLISHER however they also defined a qualifier called DCMI Agent Detail which can be family name, given names, name, affiliation location, description, date time and identifier. In Bib-2 there are 4 different structural qualifiers for NAME. How could Bib-2 be used to search for a family name in a document described by DC-Lib? ii) DC-Lib for RESOURCE TYPE uses DCMI Type Vocabulary (http://dublincore.org/documents/2000/07/11/dcmi-type-vocabulary/) as qualifiers to Resource Type, these are not included in Bib-2. iii) DC-Lib and Bib-2 for SUBJECT both have the content authority (encoding schema in DC-Lib) of LCSH, LCC, MeSH and UDC. DC-Lib also has DDC and bib-2 has 18 additional content authorities. iv) DC-Lib uses coverage/temporal for duration and coverage/spatial for geographic referent. Coverage/spatial includes using the Thesaurus of Geographic Names. v) The DC-Lib DATE has some qualifiers that are not in Bib-2 e.g. date/modified how would this be searched for using Bib-2? etc etc etc I expect Bib-2 will be used mainly for searching for physical items and DC-Lib to be used mainly to mark up digital items. However I expect that librarians will want to carry out one search in a hybrid library. I accept that much can be done by mapping between Bib-2 and DC-Lib but remain concerned that the development of DC-Lib in isolation of Bib-2 will cause unnessary interoperability problems. Am I right to be concerned? I can find out what the DC-Lib List view is on Bib-2? Therefore, I would welcome your input into this issue. Could you please be more explicit on your concerns and identify which are the access points you have identified as being extended in different ways in Bib-2 and DC-Lib, describe the nature of the documents and databases that you envisage will be described using the DC-Lib metadata elements and spell out the problems that you foresee will be encountered. I'm not sure that what is being included in DC-Lib should go into the XD Attribute Set. DC-Lib seems to be profiling additional data elements that can be used in the library community and therefore shouldn't go in the XD set. My concern is that Bib-2 is extending the access points in a different way to DC-Lib and this is likely to cause problems searching for documents described using the DC-Lib metadata elements.
