FWIW, when I first saw the psuedo-XML syntax I had a negative reaction but over time I've come to sort of like it. It looks like when a scripting language is used to directly construct XML to be returned from a web server etc. The problem with doing that was that it was easy to create non-wellformed 'XML', but XQuery would not have that problem.
