Although section section 5.5 (http://www.w3.org/TR/2005/WD-xlink11-20050428/#link-semantics <http://www.w3.org/TR/2005/WD-xlink11-20050428/> ) says that arc roles and roles have to be IRI's (Internationalized Resource Identifiers http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3987.txt), the non-normative schema does not enforce it. XBRL (http://www.xbrl.org/Specification/XBRL-RECOMMENDATION-2003-12-31+Corrected- Errata-2005-04-25.htm) has a schema for Xlink 1.0; the non-normative version (http://www.xbrl.org/2003/XLink-2003-12-31.xsd) puts more constraints on the types of attributes.
