It should indeed be transformed to actual data by inclusion of the SSIs, and that is done by setting up your server to enable SSIs. See the "Configure the Web server" section in http://validator.w3.org/docs/install#install-configure If you skipped that step in the installation process, it would also explain why clicking on the check button does not work.
