It would be nice to have a validator that will check the returned status from an http server.  For example, does page xyz return status 301?

In other words, a way to basically get all available metainformation about a page, image, etc., like the MIME type, mod time, etc.

Netscape does some of this, but an independent service would be useful for platforms not supported by Netscape.

If there already is such a service, it would be good if it were mentioned somewhere on
  http://validator.w3.org/

I'm not on this list, so a direct response would be much appreciated.
