I think the rough consensus that led to 'alternate' adoption was that the HTML spec includes that link type, so tools wouldn't need to add a profile= attribute, or deal with space separated lists of profile URIs etc. ie. it wasn't a perfect fit, but was bearable and keeps one within the existing (X&)HTML specs... Dan ps. http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/interest/ has a bunch of these too; I recommend the Sage newsreader plugin for Firefox btw; if you add feeds to the Sage folder they show up in a simple sidebar.
