I reckon there are very few problems that cannot be solved by the use of APIs that don't exist anywhere yet :) And will only come to exist at a cost far higher than supporting this notation. No wonder you think the fix is so expensive. You expect 1) a whole new API to be designed 2) implemented across enough browsers so that 3) developers can switch to it. Fixing this simple issue should not depend on refactoring CSSOM.
