Yes, we do intend to offer more advanced gradient fills; we are 
discussing this with the CSS WG so they will be applicable to both SVG 
and HTML content, through CSS.  If you look back through the minutes of 
the SVG Working Group, in particular the recent TPAC, you'll find some 
of our discussions on this, including an example page by Tavmjong Bah.

Alexey looks like a reasonable candidate, if he's interested (though 
most people are not very interested in participating in W3C Working
