http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/animate.html#AttributeTypeAttribute For the attribute "attributeType" the spec says this about the value "CSS": "CSS" This specifies that the value of "attributeName" is the name of a CSS property defined as animatable in this specification. If the author has explicitly specified "CSS" then clearly they want to target CSS, and limiting the permitted properties unnecessarily limits the capabilities of SMIL animation [compared to CSS animation]. It would seem better not to impose an artificial limit, and to enable parity between SMIL animation and CSS animation. Mozilla would like to propose striking the words "defined as animatable in this specification". Jonathan
