oops was: SVG embedded in email

I am really excited by the possibilities of SVG in email,  
particularly for people with low literacy.
In discussions on and off the senit email list there has been  
enormous interest in this development.

However,

Unfortunately for the pre-literate author when using Mail.app &  
OperaMail:

neither render the SVG inline in compose mode

neither provide a means to add SVG inline,
OperaMail attachments are in a separate area**,
Mail.app SVG attachments don't currently use img so this must be  
edited by hand to render**.

A further significant issue is that the pre-literate author when  
composing needs SVG graphics to be rendered when searching  
directories from within an application. This functionality may be  
provided by the operating system, and hence not currently supported.  
bugs are filed with Gnome, OS X and a note to  
accessibility@Microsoft. It may be that in the meantime applications  
might provide a workaround?

work on a fix for Thunderbird is in progress iiuc.

I would appreciate clarification if anyone feels they understand &  
can explain this issue better.

Opera 9.5 allows svg in <html:img> elements in the built-in mail client.
Note that interactivity and scripts have been disabled for svg:s  
referenced from an <html:img> element.
