Again, I think we are talking at cross purposes here.

Take this example where the spans have display: inline-block; and float set:

<p>This is where the sentence<span class="red left"></span><span
class="blue left clear-left"></span><span class="green left"></span>
starts.</p>


The text node " starts." (subsequent content) is still in the first line
 and is not moved down with the second and third float, so the full line
reads "This is where the sentence starts.", correct?
