I'm looking at a copy of Mac Fan, and notice that the digits in their TCY are the same height as a Japanese character. If the text were typeset as horizontal, they would be somewhat shorter than 1em and shifted up somewhat from the bottom of the em box, because digits in horizontal text sit on the alphabetic baseline. The rendering in Mac Fan is clearly better, but how does it work? ~fantasai
