I agree with you here. CSS System Colors don't have the same purpose as 
appearance.

Maybe the deprecate text should be replaced by something like that :

    " NOTE: If you want to emulate a UI control, please prefer the use of 
the 'appearance' property defined in the CSS3 UI Module. "
