gzip is purely a compression format.  There are many other archive formats,
many with a more open status than zip.   This sort of thing is often done
with file formats that aren't traditional archive formats, e.g. TIFF, 
PDF, Opentype, and the Microsoft compound file format used by Office and .wav.
