This is exactly NOT what HTML tables consist of, actually.  They consist of 
elements grouped by rows.  Since CSS is trying to express this, it too groups 
things by rows.

I suggest you read Ian Hickson's excellent weblog entry on why CSS has these 
limitations on table columns [1] before suggesting that people "get the ball 
rolling" without having any idea where you want it to roll.
