I believe it's technically possible to add background-position-x and 
background-position-y, and you gave a good use case, but it hasn't made 
enough people enthusiastic. It seems a rather isolated use case and a 
rather minor pain to have to specify the same x-coordinate three times. 
Not enough to add two new properties for.

Unless there is more evidence of its usefulness, I vote against adding 
those properties.
